Comprehensive Plan hearing delayed

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners has postponed the public hearing to review the proposed 2024 Comprehensive Plan and Future Land Use Map amendments originally scheduled for today, Jan. 16. The new meeting date will be announced once it is selected. Items to discuss during the hearing will include the needs the county should address during the next 20 years, vision statement, goals and policies, community work programs and future land use. The meeting will be held in the 2nd floor meeting room at 100 Cherokee Street in Marietta.

Remembering the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid spoke during a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre Monday. She told the crowd that despite some recent challenging times, "please understand just by sitting here today you are Dr. Martin Luther King's wildest dream." The event was held by the Cobb County Branch of the NAACP.

Later, the Cobb County Sheriff's Office participated in an MLK Day parade that wound through Marietta. The parade was sponsored by the Cobb County SCLC.

Class outlines adult guardianship

Learn about the basics of adult guardianship 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at Cobb Superior Court in Marietta. The presenter can only address general questions and cannot give advice for your specific situation. No attorney-client relationships will be established during the presentation. Public parking is available in the deck across the street at the Marietta Square East Parking Deck. Attendees should allow time to get through security. Call the law library at 770-528-1884 to register. The meeting will be in Conference Room 4500, fourth floor, 70 Haynes Street in Marietta.

Adopt a friend this month

Animals
Cobb County Animal Services is offering you a new friend for life with this month's special. During January, all dogs can be adopted for the reduced fee of $20 and cats are $10 to take home. Give a shelter animal a new home and make a new friend.

Provide your input for diversity study

Diverse business group
Give feedback about the study of the county's supplier diversity program. The final virtual public communication session will be held 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18. This will be in Spanish. During the public session, community members can go on record with comments about doing business with the county or its marketplace.

The 2024 Cobb County Disparity Study, conducted by Griffin & Strong P.C., will look at the past five years of contracts in construction, goods and services – including architecture and engineering services – and then recommend modifications or adjustments if needed. The study will also examine the use of Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses.

The Cobb County Water System and the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority have opened the 5th Annual waterSmart High School photography contest.

This contest invites high school students enrolled in Cobb County and City of Marietta School Districts to enter a photograph in one of six categories: Water at Play, Water at Work, Water in Nature, Water and People, Protecting Water, and Conserving Water. Deadline for submissions is Friday, March 1. Winners will be announced on March 28. Twelve winning entries will receive a cash prize and are created into notecards that are distributed throughout the county.

Books for sale
Save these dates and make room on your shelf. The spring library book sale will be held at Cobb Civic Center March 8 - 10. Materials for sale will include books for all ages in both hardcover and paperback, DVDs, books on CD and audiocassette, magazines and more.

Donations can give kids a head start

Cleats
The Cobb Police Athletic League is collecting new and gently used cleats for underprivileged kids through Feb. 29. Your contribution can make a lasting impact on a child's sports journey.

Donations of cleats and other sports equipment can be dropped off at any Cobb County police precinct, police headquarters or the police training center.

Share your thoughts on the new transit site

The next public information meeting for the Cumberland Transit Center Site Feasibility Study will take place 5 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Boy Scouts of America Atlanta Area Council in Atlanta. Officials have narrowed down the possible locations for the future Cumberland Transit Center. Residents are invited to come out and provide their input on the site options.

Goodwill of North Georgia's Smyrna Career Center will host a career fair 10:45 a.m. - 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 3205 South Cobb Drive SE, Smyrna. Each year, Goodwill of North Georgia secures employment for thousands of people. There is no cost to attend this event. If you have any questions, please call 904-844-9961.
