Starting Tuesday, March 19, State Route 280/South Cobb Drive, will be closed near Dobbins Air Reserve Base for eight weeks. The Georgia Department of Transportation recently announced that a section of the road from Fairground Street SE to US 41/SR 3/Cobb Parkway will close beginning March 19 at approximately 10 a.m. following morning rush hour to facilitate the full replacement of a culvert.
Drivers should avoid SR 280/South Cobb Drive - Follow signs to the recommended detour route: US 41/SR 3/Cobb Parkway SE, SR 120/South Marietta Parkway SE and Fairground Street SE. A secondary route for motorists has also been identified to assist with navigation in the area. Motorists can use US 41/SR 3/Cobb Parkway SE, SR 120/South Marietta Parkway SE and Atlanta Street SE.

Senior group to learn more about mobility projects
The Senior Citizen Council of Cobb will hear about the proposed Mobility Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax during its next annual meeting 10 a.m. - noon Thursday, March 21, at the Cobb Senior Wellness Center, 1150 Powder Springs Street, Marietta. Cobb County Department of Transportation Director Drew Raessler will be the guest speaker. Also speaking will be Cobb Senior Services Director Ioana Bovo-Nicolescu.
Raessler will discuss the Mobility-SPLOST proposal to fund many transit projects and improvements which will be on the ballot in November.

The Water System is proposing to change from charging for stormwater through water and sewer fees to charging a dedicated stormwater fee based on the amount of impervious surface (rooftops, pavement, etc.). The proposed fee structure ensures properties that generate more stormwater runoff volume pay for their share of impact to the stormwater system.

This month, help Cobb County Senior Services with spotlighting the Meals on Wheels program and the role it plays in the community. Five-pack meals are delivered weekly by dedicated and trained volunteers to the client’s door.
Menus are planned and prepared under the supervision of a registered dietitian and are designed to provide one-third of an adult’s daily nutritional requirements. Clients who have difficulty adequately feeding their cat or dog may receive supplemental pet food at no charge. These deliveries also provide friendly check-ins to help these seniors combat isolation.
The application deadline for vendors to participate in the Cobb County Parks Spring Arts Festival has been extended to Friday, March 22. Vendor fees have also been waived for the event 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, April 6, at the Jim R. Miller Park and Event Center. Sign up today to showcase your hand-made items, food and other festival booths or activities.
The deadline to apply for homestead exemptions is coming at the end of the month. Use the online form at CobbTax.org to submit a 2023 homestead exemption application. Applications must be received or USPS postmarked by April 1 to be accepted for this tax year.
Homestead exemptions are deducted from the assessed value of the qualifying property (40% of the fair market value). Exemptions only apply to homestead property you own and occupy as your legal residence. You can have a homestead exemption on only one property. If you are married, by law you can only have one homestead exemption between you and your spouse.

You can also donate onions to help those in need. The Extension Office has partnered with Mary's Food Pantry, a part of the St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Ann Catholic Church to help provide fresh produce to families and individuals in need throughout the metro Atlanta area. Last year they were able to donate more than 600 pounds of onions.
Pre-orders are accepted until April 17 by mail (postmarked by April 15).
Customers will pick-up their onions Saturday May 18, or earlier at the office at 678 S. Cobb Drive, Suite 200, Marietta.
Congratulations to Cobb Department of Transportation Director Drew Raessler who is this year's recipient of the 2023 Silver Eagle Award. Family members and DOT officials joined him to celebrate the award, presented during the regular Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday.
The annual honor recognizes a member of county management who demonstrates teamwork and outstanding leadership during the year. During his time with Cobb, Raessler led the construction of critical roadway projects for the Braves stadium, oversaw the completion of the 2050 Comprehensive Plan and delivered numerous transportation improvements through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax program.

A final public hearing is scheduled 7 p.m., March 26,for proposed amendments to the Official Code of Cobb County. These proposals impact Chapter 50 (Environment), Chapter 110 (Subdivisions), Chapter 122 (Utilities), Chapter 126 (Vehicles for Hire), and Chapter 134 (Zoning). The public hearing on the proposals will be held in the second-floor Commissioners’ Meeting Room, Cobb County Building, 100 Cherokee Street, Marietta.
Cobb County will hold its first Sustainability Forum and Expo for the general public 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta. The free event will include demonstrations, food, interactive exhibits and guest speakers on green initiatives. Keep Cobb Beautiful will provide the first 100 attendees with a free gift.
