Cobb seeks help with cemetery preservation

Tombstones
The county has submitted a grant application to the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund for assistance with four of Cobb’s historic sites – Sardis Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Old Ebenezer Cemetery, Noonday Extension Cemetery and Little Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

The grant would pay a consultant to perform archaeology surveys for the cemeteries and write a maintenance manual for African American cemeteries in Cobb. The surveys will help define the cemetery boundaries and identify locations of unknown graves. The maintenance manual will be available to property owners, cemetery preservation specialists and volunteers to provide directions on restoring and maintaining our historic cemeteries properly.

Volunteers are always needed to assist with the maintenance of Cobb cemeteries. To get involved, contact Cobb County Historic Preservation Planner Mandy Elliott, at mandy.elliott@cobbcounty.org.

Sandy Plains Road

Cobb Department of Transportation will hold an open house 5 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in Marietta to learn more about the plans to improve safety and traffic operations on Holly Springs Road between Sandy Plains Road and Post Oak Tritt Road. This event will be held at The Art Place - Mountain View, 3330 Sandy Plains Road in Marietta.

During this open house, the county will have concept boards on display and will be seeking input from the public and nearby residents regarding the options for these proposed improvements along the Holly Springs corridor. Residents will have the opportunity to view concept boards showing the options for improvements as well as share input and provide feedback.

It's time to apply for homestead exemptions! Use the online form at CobbTax.org to submit a 2023 homestead exemption application. Applications must be received or USPS postmarked by April 1 to be accepted for this tax year.

Homestead exemptions are deducted from the assessed value of the qualifying property (40% of the fair market value).
