Cobb PARKS will hold its first Spring Arts Festival 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday, April 6, at the Jim R. Miller Park and Event Center in Marietta. More than 100 vendors are signed up to display their wares and talents at the event. There will also be food trucks and entertainment for all ages including a magician, acrobats, glass blowing, Atlanta Falcons cheerleaders and mascot Freddie the Falcon. Entry and parking are free.
Rid yourself of hard-to-recycle plastics 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the old BrandsMart parking lot, 3305 Busbee Drive, Kennesaw. Keep Cobb Beautiful will be taking away items like Styrofoam, bubble wrap, and plastic utensils. Several Cobb County libraries will hold solar eclipse watching events Monday, April 8. Details of activities vary by location, but each will provide a place to view this rare celestial event.
1:45 - 4 p.m. West Cobb Regional Library, 1750 Dennis Kemp Lane, Kennesaw. One pair of protective viewing glasses per family. Live streaming TV viewing of the eclipse via the NASA channel. Crafts for the whole family. Click here for details.

County department committed to safety
Cobb County Department of Transportation’s Road Maintenance Division received statewide attention last week when it was presented with the District 7 Golden Backhoe Award and the Lester E. Feathers Damage Prevention Award at the Georgia Utilities Coordinating Council’s annual conference.
Each year, the council selects one utility agency from within each of its seven districts that has demonstrated a commitment to safe digging practices as the recipient of the Golden Backhoe Award. Additionally, one team which has gone above and beyond in their commitment to safety is presented with the Lester E. Feathers Award.
The council’s efforts aim to improve damage prevention throughout the state through coordination, cooperation, and communication.
Book Fest comes to Powder Springs
The Book Worm Book Fest, running April 8 - 13 in downtown Powder Springs, will feature more than 25 authors and diverse events, including:
• Storytime in the Park featuring local author Kelly Young-Silverman and the Cobb Library Bookmobile
• Ticketed mystery night event with author Vanessa Riley
• One Book One City author discussion with Dr. Ian K. Smith and much more.

Explore Cobb's sustainable future
Cobb County will hold its first Sustainability Forum and Expo for the general public 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Jim R. Miller Park in Marietta. The free event will include demonstrations, food, interactive exhibits and guest speakers on green initiatives. Keep Cobb Beautiful will provide the first 100 attendees with a free gift.
Cobb County Animal Services is running a special "Pet Files" adoption special this month. All animals with an eligible adoption date of April 1and prior are just $20. All others are $50. Embark on your pet adoption adventure and solve mysteries with a new companion.
Are you interested in learning about the entities that protect our community? Join the 2024 Citizens Public Safety Academy, starting Tuesday, May 7, at the Cobb County Public Safety Police Training Academy at 2435 East-West Connector, Austell.
During this 16-week course, the Department of Public Safety will help participants gain advanced and specialized knowledge about the Cobb County Police, Fire and Emergency Services, Animal Services, and the E-911 center. Classes will be conducted every Tuesday evening. Graduation will be held during the final week.
Available spots are limited. To join the academy, interested residents should live or work in Cobb County and be at least 21 years of age. Applications are due by 3 p.m. Friday, April 29.

Onion sale shows the appeal
Order now for the UGA Cobb Extension's annual Vidalia Sweet Onion Sale. It's a tangy sweet way to support UGA Extension's Agriculture Department in Cobb County. Each 10-pound bag is $12 and comes fresh from the field of Morris Farm in Vidalia, Ga.
You can also donate onions to help those in need. The Extension Office has partnered with Mary's Food Pantry, a part of the St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Ann Catholic Church to help provide fresh produce to families and individuals in need throughout the metro Atlanta area. Last year they were able to donate more than 600 pounds of onions.
Pre-orders are accepted until Wednesday, April 17, by mail (postmarked by April 15).
Customers will pick-up their onions Saturday May 18, or earlier at the office at 678 S. Cobb Drive, Suite 200, Marietta.
