Cobb County Government offices will be closed on Monday, June 19, in honor of Juneteenth. The national holiday celebrates June 19, 1865, when the Union army freed the last enslaved African Americans held in Confederate states. There are numerous opportunities to commemorate the day in Cobb, including the NAACP annual celebration this weekend, June 16 - 18, in downtown Marietta Square.
Chairwoman Lisa Cupid will hold her annual African American Policy Forum, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Monday, June 19, at the Jim R. Miller Park and Event Center, 2245 Callaway Road, Marietta. The forum will feature panels, speakers and a community dialogue about the impact of public policy on the lives of Black people today.
Keep Cobb Beautiful will hold its household hazardous waste collection event, 9 a.m. - noon, Saturday, June 17, at Jim R. Miller Park to help prevent harmful waste from entering our environment and water systems. Residents can safely dispose of a variety of chemicals and items at the event such as household cleaning products, batteries, fertilizers, motor oil, antifreeze, gas, diesel fuel, pesticides, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, paint removers, kerosene, compact florescent lights and paints.
Items not accepted include agricultural waste, ammunition, appliances, bio-hazardous or bio-medical waste, controlled substances, electronics, explosives, medications of any type, radioactive materials, syringes/needles, tires and trash. Jim R. Miller Park is located at 2245 Callaway Road, Marietta.
Walk, run or ride on new Kennesaw Mountain park trails
Cobb County and other local leaders officially opened Kennesaw Mountain Trail Pedestrian Improvements with a ribbon-cutting Friday. These Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax improvements added three new multi-use trail segments to complement the almost 20 miles of existing trails used for hiking, running, dog walking and horseback riding within Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park.
The nearly four miles of trails were funded by a combination of Federal Highway, National Park Service, Cobb County Marietta Water System, City of Marietta, and Cobb County contributions.
Celebrate Gritters Library's last day open from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the location. The day will be filled with fun games, a balloon drop and more. Register to build a gingerbread library (limited to one kit per household). The branch at 880 Shaw Park Road, Marietta, is closing to allow for the construction of a new library at the site.
Discover a place for summer enjoyment with the first of three Family Fun Safety Days 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, at the Cobb County Safety Village.Wear a firefighter hat, hop into a squad car and ring the firetruck bell. Kids of all ages can learn about safety, tour Sparky's House, play safety games, see up-close emergency vehicles and more.

The Board of Tax Assessors recently mailed residential assessment notices. Cobb's Chief Assessor says most people will see an increase in their assessments due to a red-hot real estate market in 2022.
Taxpayers can research home prices in their neighborhood and decide whether to appeal using tools on the Tax Assessors webpage, cobbassessor.org. The deadline date to file appeals is located on the assessment notice. Appeals can be filed electronically, or you can call the Tax Assessors office for assistance.
