Get behind the wheels of a variety of trucks, buses, boats, firetrucks and more at this weekend's Truck-A-Palooza 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. Find it all at the Town Center at Cobb mall in the back parking lot by the food court, 400 Ernest W Barrett Parkway NW, Kennesaw.
The cost is $5 per person with a maximum of $20 per family (up to six family members). Children under two years are free. Tickets are available at the entrance. All proceeds will benefit the Cobb County Safety Village.

More than two decades have passed, but we have not forgotten. Today, we remember those who died on Sept. 11, 2001, in terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and on the hijacked plane that crashed in Pennsylvania.
Improving equity in health care
Cobb County Public Library and Morehouse School of Medicine are launching a partnership to address gaps in lifelong health outcomes in communities across the county. The kickoff event for the partnership is Access Granted: Courageous Conversations to Advance Health Equity 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Powder Springs Library.
Dr. Tabia Henry Akintobi is the featured keynote speaker for the event. The Mableton resident is professor and chair of Community Health and Preventive Medicine and associate dean of Community Engagement. A widely recognized public health leader, Akintobi is co-editor of Black Health in the South and co-author of The Morehouse Model: How One School of Medicine Revolutionized Community Engagement and Health Equity.
Authors sign up now for regional book event
The Cobb Public Library System will host a Georgia Author Fair showcasing writers and their works 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, at Switzer Library in Marietta.
Authors, who must register to participate by Thursday, Oct. 14, will have the chance to sell their books and network with other writers at the event. Author space is limited and reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. The Switzer Library is located at 266 Roswell Street, Marietta.
Residents can rock and relax to the Sounds of Georgia at the next Wine Down Wednesday event 8 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre. General admission is free. Grab your lawn chair and picnic basket and head on over. VIP tables, food and beverages are available for purchase.
During the coming weekend, everyone has a chance to spend an evening with the renown funk and pop band Kool & the Gang. Famed for their 1970s and 1980s hits such as "Celebration," the group will take the Mableton stage 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16. The doors open at 7 p.m. Click here to purchase tickets.

Town halls provide face-to-face feedback
Cobb Commission Chairwoman Lisa Cupid continues her meetings throughout the county this week, talking with constituents in a series of town halls. She is sharing her top priorities and taking questions. All events are free and open to the public. No RSVP is needed.

Temporary closing on Silver Comet Trail
A section of the Silver Comet Trail will be closed for three to five days starting Sept. 18 while Colonial Pipeline company performs routine maintenance on its underground pipeline just east of Anderson Farm Road. The work will involve excavation of approximately 40 feet of their 12-inch diameter pipeline for inspection and repair as necessary. Signs will be posted at trailheads and at points along the trail.
Justice and rehabilitation to be celebrated
The Cobb County DUI Court will celebrate its 15-year anniversary in conjunction with its 48th Commencement Ceremony and National Recovery Month 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at the Strand Theatre on Marietta Square. State Court Judge Eric A. Brewton will preside over the DUI Court commencement ceremony. The event will celebrate the graduates throughout the past 15 years of the program. Alumnus and award-winning author, Melissa Gissy Witherspoon, author of: “I’m Sober… So Now What?” will speak. The theatre is located at 117 North Park Square, Marietta.
Protect yourself from fraud
With Medicare Open Enrollment coming up Oct. 15 - Dec. 7, Cobb Senior Services and Senior Medicare Patrol are giving presentations at five senior centers on how to protect yourself from Medicare fraud.

Seniors can enjoy a day all to themselves on Senior Day, Friday, Sept. 22. Admission, parking, and special activities for seniors are free from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. before the fair opens. When the fair opens at 4 p.m., everyone age 55 and older will have free admission.
