District Attorney investigators use DNA to solve a 50-year-old murder
For more than 50 years, the mystery of who killed a young Marietta girl has haunted investigators and troubled the community. Nine-year-old Debbie Lynn Randall was reported missing on Jan. 13, 1972, when she failed to come home from the nearby laundromat.
The Office of District Attorney Flynn D. Broady, Jr. confirms the killer is William B. Rose of Mableton. DA's investigators say evidence preserved by Marietta detectives 52 years old and new DNA technology helped solve this mystery.
Cobb Legal and the Law Library will present a free class on the basics of child custody 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Cobb Superior Court conference room 4500 in Marietta. Attendees will learn about child custody, including the legitimation process, modification and the difference between physical and legal custody. Keep Cobb Beautiful will hold a community recycling event 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at White Water Six Flags in Marietta. Materials accepted will include electronics, metals, textiles and plastics.
They will not accept documents for shredding, sharps, needles, medications, paint, hazardous waste, glass, carpet, mattresses or car seats. The site is located at 250 Cobb Parkway, Marietta.

Cobb County Elections and Registration will host a Town Hall 5 - 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, in the Senior Wellness Center. Meet Interim Director Gerry Miller and learn about the department's divisions, duties and the November Municipal Elections.
A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations. You may also register to vote, request absentee ballots and find out what goes into becoming an election worker. The Senior Wellness Center is located at 1150 Powder Springs Street, Marietta.

Meet the people at 911 during a festive fun event 10 a.m. - noon Saturday, Oct. 7, in Marietta. Bring your children to the Cobb 911 Kids Expo to learn about calling for help, play fun games, tour the 911 center, talk on the police radio, and more activities. You may even meet Turbo the tortoise!
This event is free and great for kids in grades K-5. Children must be accompanied by a parent. The event will be held at 911 operations, 140 N. Marietta Parkway, Marietta.

Karl takes off: a fond farewell to our former airport director
Deputy DOT Director Karl Von Hagel is taking off for his "dream job" as director of the Ohio State University Airport. Von Hagel leaves as Cobb DOT's Deputy Director and led the airport for nearly three decades. He saw the airport's economic impact increase dramatically and become a focal point of the area for events like the Olympics, Super Bowl, and the facility becoming an international airport.
A group recently gathered at the Cobb International Airport to say goodbye to Karl and wish him good luck.
