Cobb County Government offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day, May 27. Many county services will remain available online through cobbcounty.org. Memorial Day is a solemn time when we remember and honor those who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Memorial Day ceremonies in Cobb:
• Pay your respects noon Monday at the Marietta National Cemetery, 500 Washington Avenue NE.
• Powder Springs Memorial Day Ceremony will be noon Mondayat the Veteran's Memorial in front of the Powder Springs Library, 4181 Atlanta Street, Powder Springs.
• Smyrna Memorial Day Ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Memorial next to City Hall, 2800 King Street SE, Smyrna.
• Acworth Memorial Day Ceremony is 10 - 11 a.m. Monday at Cauble Park, Patriots Point, 4425 Beach Street, Acworth.
Make important choices during primary
Cast your ballot in the General Primary/Nonpartisan Election 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 21. You must vote at your assigned precinct. You will need an acceptable form of identification such as Georgia driver's license, state-issued voter ID card, a valid U.S. passport, or a military photo ID.
Redistricting has occurred since the 2022 mid-term election. Check for updates on your district and precinct at mvp.sos.ga.gov/s/. Any changes to precinct locations will be reflected on the My Voter website.
To honor the life of Eddie Jackson, the husband of Cobb County Tax Commissioner Carla Jackson, the west tax office located at 3858 Kemp Ridge Road in Acworth will be closed Tuesday, May 21.
Public look at pilot transit program for South Cobb
Learn about the proposed microtransit project in the South Cobb area at a county Department of Transportation open house, Tuesday, May 21, at the Sweetwater Valley Library, 5000 Austell-Powder Springs Road, Suite 100, Austell. The findings of its equity analysis will also be available. This proposed Pilot Zone service will replace the FLEX service that operates in the same area. No formal presentation will be given, county staff will be on hand to answer questions.
Cobb is celebrating Older Americans Month with a free food giveaway for seniors 55 and older, noon - 2 p.m. Thursday, May 23,atFirst Christian Church of Mableton, 878 Old Alabama Road SW, Mableton. Cobb County Senior Services and First Christian Church of Mableton have teamed up to provide a free box of fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, and more for Cobb seniors. The giveaway is first come, first served. Please bring a valid ID.
You can now update social services benefits at self-serve kiosks at public libraries across the state. Georgia Gateway benefits kiosks are in place at all Cobb County libraries providing access to critical resources for individuals and families.
Users may review, change, and renew benefits including Medicaid, PeachCare for Kids, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program known as SNAP, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families known as TANF, Childcare and Parent Services known as CAPS, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children known as WIC.
The self-service kiosks will also help by reducing wait times and by providing access at the point of need.
Fly your broomstick and chase the quaffle in Teen Muggle Quidditch 10 a.m. - noon Thursday, May 23, at Logan Farm Park, 4405 Cherokee Street, Acworth. Players ages 11 -18 will vie to seek the golden snitch while riding pool noodles. Family may attend to cheer on the keepers, chasers and beaters as they fly about the field scoring points. There will activities, crafts, and scavenger hunts for family members not in the game. No registration is needed.
Big trucks and little trucks are rolling to the Cobb Civic Center for the county Department of Transportation Touch A Truck event, 1 - 4 p.m. Friday, May 24, at 548 South Marietta Parkway SE, Marietta. Admission is free.
There will be transportation and construction equipment, sanitation vehicles, and vegetation equipment to highlight Public Works Week and the amazing work they do to keep the county running smoothly.

Start your summer with a splash at Cobb PARKS' two outdoor pools opening Memorial Day weekend. Cool off with the family at Sewell Park Pool and Seven Springs Water Park.

The first chapter of the Cobb County Library Summer Reading Challenge is on. Kids and adults can participate in the gamified reading challenge, happening now though July 31. You can earn a chance to win prizes through reading and activities.
Come by Switzer Library for a big reveal at the summer reading program kickoff party 4 - 6 p.m. Saturday, June 1. Find out who will be the library's new mascot and what name was chosen. Musical entertainment this Memorial Day weekend at the Mable House Amphitheatre will start with an evening of Jazz with Boney James featuring Pieces of a Dream, 7 p.m. Saturday, May 25.
The next night will feature an evening of R&B with Tamar Braxton featuring Silk, 7 p.m. Sunday, May 26.

Donations can help you get a perfect pet this month
You can get your adoption fees waived at Cobb County Animal Services through the end of May. Join in the mission by donating either six cans of unopened and unexpired pet food or bags containing the same weighing more than 10 pounds when you're looking to take a pet into your home. The shelter is located at 1060 Al Bishop Drive, Marietta.
In honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day next month, the Cobb County Victim Witness Unit and the Family Advocacy Center will host Elder Abuse Training on June 12. This comprehensive session will provide essential insights and strategies for addressing elder abuse effectively. This training an opportunity for professional development and also offers POST Credits for attendees. Registration is now open.
