Advance voting continues for Georgia

Cut down on your wait time and cast your ballot now. Advance voting for the November General Election is 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon - 5 p.m. Sunday until Nov. 1. You can view the wait times here for dozen of early voting locations across Cobb County. On Election Day, Nov. 5, voters must go to their assigned polling places. There will be no voting Nov. 2 - 4.

Learn more about the modern hazards of the internet and how to protect yourself and your business from online scammers 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at Cobb's cybersecurity education event, 1150 Powder Springs Street, Marietta.

The event is presented by the Cobb Information Technology Services Department and the county commissioner District 2 office in observance of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

Get rid of old medications the responsible way

Dispose of expired and unused medications safely at Keep Cobb Beautiful's Medication Take Back event, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at three locations:
• Police Precinct 1, 2380 Cobb Parkway, NW, Kennesaw
• Tim Lee Senior Center, 3332 Sandy Plains Road, Marietta
• Freeman Poole Senior Center, 4024 South Hurt Road, Smyrna

Items accepted include prescription medications, over the counter medications, liquid and pills, ointments and creams, as well as pet medications.

Cobb PARKS named best agency in district

The Georgia Recreation and Parks Association 5th district selected Cobb PARKS as its 2024 Agency of the Year last week. The department was recognized for its contributions, community engagement, events and more. Recreation Program Coordinator Debbie Parrish was also named Outstanding Programmer for her contributions to Therapeutic Recreation Services.

No lead pipes used by county water system

The Cobb County Water System announced last week it has complied with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations for all public water systems to inventory and submitted water service line material data.

No lead service lines have been identified in the Cobb County Water System's service area, which includes most of unincorporated Cobb County and the cities of Acworth, Kennesaw, and Powder Springs. The inventory was developed using historical records, physical inspections, and statistical analyses. Per EPA's guidance, the water service line material for both the system-owned side and customer-owned side of the pipes are labeled in the inventory.

Train to help your community

Residents can still join Cobb's Community Emergency Response Team, a vital part of our community's safety network. To become a CERT member, you must complete three training sessions on consecutive Saturdays. Cobb County Emergency Management Agency has three opportunities to complete the upcoming training. Each session runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a lunch break.

The dates for upcoming training are Nov. 2, 9, and 16.

The training is free and requires registration. Click here to fill out the online application.

Applicants must follow up by emailing Bernard.king@Cobbcounty.org with a photo of their driver’s license.

Event to offer resources for veterans

U.S. Soldier in uniform

Veterans, active duty personnel, National Guard members, Reserve service members, caregivers, families, and survivors are all invited to Georgia's largest veteran resource fair. The annual We CARE Vet Fair, presented by United Military Care, will take place Nov. 1 - 2 at the Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta.

Admission and parking are free. Enjoy a complimentary lunch while supplies last. Hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1, and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2. Officials with Veterans Affairs and the state Department of Veteran Services will be present both days. Vendors, organizations and other agencies will only be on site Friday.

District changes may impact your information

New Cobb district map

Cobb County recently adopted a new district map and some of the district boundaries changed significantly. This means you may be getting a newsletter from a commissioner who is not your commissioner any longer.

Get ready for the holiday season

It's that time of year again - The Annual Holiday Inspirations program will be presented by Leah Wilson and Terri Carter 10 a.m. - noon Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Cobb County Extension office in Marietta. 

Make quick and easy gifts for the holidays as well as sample quick and easy food dishes you can prepare. At this workshop they'll give you everything you need to make the holidays a huge success. The class will be in Suite 200 at 678 South Cobb Drive, Marietta. Registration costs $10. Call 770-528-4070 to register by Nov. 8. Space is limited.

Board considers proposed amendments

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is considering amendments to the county’s code, specifically definitions and these chapters:

  • Chapter 2 (Administration) - Film Permits
  • Chapter 2 Part 2 (Administration) - South Cobb Redevelopment Authority
  • Chapter 6 (Alcoholic Beverages) - License Review Board
  • Chapter 18 (Building Regulations) - Plumbing Code
  • Chapter 50 (Environment) - Soil Erosion, Sedimentation, and Pollution Control Ordinance
  • Chapter 78 (Licenses, Permits, and Businesses) - Door-to-Door Salesperson’s Permit
  • Chapter 110 (Subdivisions) - Plat Approval
  • Chapter 122 (Utilities) - Water and Wastewater Systems
  • Chapter 134 (Zoning) - Accessory Dwelling Units

These amendments will be summarized during a work session at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 22. You can watch the work session on CobbTV.  

Residents can give feedback about these changes during public hearings at 9 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, and at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 21, at David Hankerson Building, 100 Cherokee Street, 2nd floor, Marietta.

Food drive to help the community

Thanksgiving dinner

The Center for Family Resources is hosting its 38th annual Thanks for Giving food drive. The goal is to provide 1,000 Cobb families with food for the Thanksgiving school break. 

The CFR is a nonprofit dedicated to assisting Cobb families facing homelessness and equipping them with resources to achieve self-sufficiency.

For donations of food, drop off your non-perishable food items through Nov. 15 at the Cobb Family Advocacy Center, 277 SE Fairground Street, Marietta.

Donated items will be distributed to families the week before Thanksgiving. Click here to contribute.

Assistance just a click away

Findhelp.cobbcounty.gov logo

Cobb County has partnered with FindHelp to create a new online resource that connects residents with local, vetted assistance programs. On the site, you can search for free or reduced-cost services like medical care, food, job training, and more. Residents can access this new portal by visiting findhelp.cobbcounty.gov. The initiative is funded through an allocation of the American Rescue Plan Act.
