The Board of Commissioners will hold the final House Bill 581 public hearing 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the BOC meeting room, 100 Cherokee Street, Marietta. If the board decides to vote on opting out of HB 581, it must do so during this meeting, just before the state-mandated deadline.
HB 581, approved by voters in November, implements a statewide adjusted base year ad valorem homestead exemption. Jurisdictions may opt out of the homestead exemption by following specific procedures by March 1. Cobb County already has a floating homestead exemption, which benefits taxpayers more.
The deadline for Cobb County homeowners to apply for a homestead exemption is April 1 to receive the exemption for that tax year. Applications must be received or USPS postmarked by Tuesday, April 1, to be accepted for the 2025 tax year. Go online here for more details.
